A properly sloped PVC sump pump discharge pipe exiting a house to prevent freezing.

In Toronto and the GTA, winter temperatures frequently drop well below zero. For homeowners, this poses a significant risk: a frozen sump pump discharge line. If the outlet pipe freezes, your pump has nowhere to send the water, which can lead to pump burnout and a flooded basement.

At North Star Solution, we specialize in Sump Pump Maintenance and emergency repairs. Here is how you can protect your home this winter. Call us today at tel:+14379862947

1. Increase the Slope of the Discharge Pipe

Water only freezes if it sits in the pipe. Ensure your exterior discharge line has a steep downward slope away from the house. Gravity will help the water drain out quickly before it has a chance to turn into ice.

2. Use a Smooth-Walled Rigid Pipe for Winter

While flexible corrugated plastic hoses are common in summer, their ridges trap small amounts of water that easily freeze. We recommend switching to a smooth-walled PVC pipe for the exterior portion of the line during winter to ensure a clear, fast flow.

3. Install an Air Gap (Freeze Guard)

One of the most effective solutions is an “air gap” or “freeze guard” attachment installed near the exterior wall. If the main underground line freezes, the water can escape through this gap, preventing it from backing up into your basement.

4. Insulate the Exterior Pipe

For sections of the pipe that are exposed to the wind, consider using straw, mulch, or professional-grade pipe insulation. However, be careful not to block the actual outlet where the water exits.

5. Keep the Outlet Clear of Snow and Ice

After a heavy Toronto snowstorm, check the area where your sump pump pipe exits. Shovel away any snow drifts that might be burying the outlet. If the exit is blocked by snow, the water inside will quickly freeze solid.
